Dull thuds still echo through the streets. Every now and then, a residual bottle rocket climbs up into the distant sky and pops a belated, insistent boom.
But the haze of smoke that blanketed the neighborhood an hour ago has mostly cleared now, and a full moon is shining down brightly, and the stars have arrived and spread out in all directions across the sky.
They hover up above quietly and calmly, as they have for millions of years, and they stare down at us and wonder in silent bemusement what the fuss was all about.
